How to Avoid Damage to Seals on Vacuum Lifting Equipment

The condition of the seals on your vacuum lifting equipment is critical to safe and efficient operation. Damaged or poorly maintained seals can reduce lifting performance, increase wear, and create unnecessary safety risks on site.

Follow the below simple best practices to help maximise seal life and keep your equipment operating safely.

  1. Don’t Leave the Machine Sitting on a Panel for Long Periods

Avoid leaving the machine resting on a panel for more than 5 minutes at a time when not actively lifting.

Why?

  • Prolonged compression can deform the seals.
  • Flattened seals may lose their ability to create an effective vacuum.
  • Premature wear can lead to unnecessary replacement costs.

Tip: Remove the machine from the panel whenever there is a delay in lifting operations.

  1. Never Drag the Machine Across Panel Surfaces

Always lift and reposition the machine rather than dragging it across the panel.

Why?

  • Dragging causes excessive friction on the seals.
  • Seal edges can tear, split, or wear unevenly.
  • Damage may not always be visible immediately but can affect lifting performance.

Tip: If the machine needs repositioning, fully release the vacuum and move it correctly.

  1. Ensure Correct Positioning on the Panel

Before lifting, make sure the machine is positioned correctly on the panel surface.

Why?

  • Incorrect positioning can place uneven pressure on the seals.
  • Poor contact can increase wear and reduce vacuum efficiency.
  • Proper positioning helps achieve a secure lift every time.

Tip: Perform a visual check before activating the vacuum system.

  1. Ensure Operators Are Properly Trained

Appropriate training should be completed before using the equipment. Where possible, on-site training is recommended. (We are re-introducing our on-site training in 2026! Ask us for more information hire@vaclifting.co.uk)

Why?

  • Operators learn the correct handling procedures.
  • Site teams become aware of the risks associated with damaged seals.
  • Proper training reduces avoidable damage and downtime.

Tip: Encourage operators to report seal damage immediately rather than continuing to use the equipment.

  1. Treat the Equipment with Respect

Vacuum lifting equipment is a precision tool and should be handled accordingly.

Why?

  • Rough handling shortens the life of seals and components.
  • Careful use reduces maintenance costs and equipment downtime.
  • Well-maintained equipment performs more reliably and safely.
  • If seals are damaged, swap them out for new ones immediately.

Tip: Think of the seals as a critical safety component, not a consumable to be abused.

  1. Use Only Soap and Water for Cleaning

Do not use chemicals, solvents, or harsh cleaning products on seals.

Why?

  • Chemicals can degrade rubber compounds.
  • Seal flexibility and performance can be affected.
  • Damage may occur even when deterioration is not immediately visible.

Tip: A simple clean with soap and water is sufficient for routine maintenance.

  1. Avoid Lifting Dirty or Dusty Panels

Inspect panel surfaces before lifting.

Why?

  • Dirt, dust, and debris can become trapped between the seal and the panel.
  • Abrasive particles accelerate seal wear.
  • Contamination can affect vacuum performance.

Tip: Clean the panel surface before lifting whenever possible.

  1. Store the Machine Correctly

Proper storage is essential when the machine is not in use.

Why?

  • Prevents unnecessary compression and damage to seals.
  • Protects equipment from dirt, moisture, and site contaminants.
  • Extends the overall life of the machine.

Tip: Store equipment in accordance with our recommendations and avoid placing weight on the seals during storage.

Quick Seal Care Checklist

Before Every Lift:

  • ✓ Check seals for cuts, tears, or excessive wear
  • ✓ Ensure the panel surface is clean
  • ✓ Position the machine correctly
  • ✓ Confirm the machine has not been dragged into position

After Use:

  • ✓ Clean seals using soap and water only
  • ✓ Remove dirt and debris
  • ✓ Store the machine correctly
  • ✓ Report and replace any damaged seals immediately

Remember: Looking after the seals not only extends equipment life but also helps ensure safe lifting operations on site. A few simple checks and good handling practices can prevent costly downtime and avoidable seal replacements.
